My Duties with USS
Rodgers
Aug 1978 - Mar
1979
When I realized
that QMs had no reenlistment bonus, I left the regular Navy, but I
continued with
the reserves and joined the SelRes of the USS Rodgers out of the
Portland OR reserve center
I Loved the Summer cruises and it convinced me that I
made a wrong decision by leaving active duty.
Mar 1979 I returned to
the
regular Navy and was assigned to USS
Sacramento (AOE-1).
Post Script - In the
mid 90s I met a QMCS who was assigned to the Fleet Training Group
(FltTraGru) In 1978 he was a QMSR
assigned
to a ship in overhaul in Portland. He was sent TAD to USS Rodgers
so he could get some "sea time" and he was assigned to be under
instruction with me. He told me it was my enthusiasm and and love
of
navigation that convinced him to make the Navy his career.
After he
retired from the Navy he became a merchant captain.
